Chapter 6.16 - Impoundment#

6.16.010 - Animals in violation to be impounded.#

Any animal which is, to the knowledge of the chief of animal control, engaged in activity or existing in a condition prohibited by this title shall be taken and impounded at the animal control center for disposition under this title.

6.16.020 - Impoundment—Peace officer.#

In addition to the power vested in the chief of animal control for the impoundment of animals found at large or otherwise in violation of this title, any peace officer is hereby empowered to impound such animal and to turn such animal over to the chief of animal control for disposition under this title.

6.16.030 - Animals—Period of impoundment—Notice to owner.#

Any animal which is, to the knowledge of the animal control officer, engaged in an activity or is existing in a condition prohibited by this title shall be impounded. Once impounded at the animal control center, the disposition or redemption of the animal shall be governed by the regulations of the county.

6.16.040 - Animals voluntarily surrendered or deposited.#

Any animal which is voluntarily surrendered to or deposited with the animal control center or authorized personnel thereof by the owner shall not be deemed to be impounded, and need not be kept or retained for any minimum period of time.

6.16.050 - Redemption.#

The owner of any animal impounded may, at any time before the disposition of the animal, redeem it by offering proof of ownership, and by redeeming all proper fees and charges accrued as provided for by this title; provided, however, that if the animal is one which is subject to a license in this title, the licensing requirements must be satisfied before the animal's release, except that an impounded dog that has not been vaccinated against rabies, (or exempted therefrom by an exemption certificate as provided in this title) may be released to an owner who has paid all fees required in this chapter, including the license fee, on condition that such owner shall:

1. Have the dog vaccinated for rabies within ten days; and

2. Exhibit a valid certificate of vaccination to the chief of animal control within ten days, at which time the license will be issued.

6.16.060 - Fees.#

The chief of animal control shall charge and collect fees, as established by Placer County, for every impounded animal when claimed and before release:

1. Food and ordinary care;

2. Extraordinary care or expense;

3. Redemption fee;

4. For taking into custody any dog or cat at the request of its owner.

6.16.070 - Disposal.#

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this title, an impounded animal which is not redeemed within the applicable holding period specified in this title may, in the discretion of the chief of animal control, be sold, destroyed or otherwise disposed of.

(b) If an animal is sold, the receipt signed by the chief of animal control shall be valid title to the purchases.

(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title to the contrary, an impounded animal which is determined by the chief of animal control to be unfit and of no further use, dangerous, or injured or ill may be destroyed or otherwise disposed of as ordered by the chief of animal control.
